Meet Kirsty ~ the trainer behind The Holistic Dog Method

Working breeds, spicy dogs, and the humans willing to learn alongside them.

For more than a decade, I’ve helped people build calmer, clearer relationships with their dogs through practical training, thoughtful structure, and steady leadership. My work centres on high-drive breeds, reactive behaviour, anxious rescues, and the human–dog partnerships that shape long-term change.

My Story

How I found my way into this work

Growing up in Gippsland with a park ranger father meant my early years were spent outdoors — reading landscapes, watching animals, and learning to notice what others missed. I was a quiet observer by nature, and with three much older brothers, paying attention became second nature.

Horses were my first teachers. Years spent riding and later photographing for a horse trainer taught me timing, softness, emotional regulation, and the power of pressure and release — lessons that quietly laid the groundwork for how I would later work with dogs.

When injuries, allergies, and chronic pain meant I had to step away from that world, my focus shifted — and landed firmly on the Kelpie.

Long before I owned one, I was fascinated by the intelligence, instinct, and connection working dogs bring to their job. All fed by watching McLeod’s Daughters. I studied bloodlines, working styles, and handling long before a Kelpie ever came home.

When dogs did enter my life, they didn’t arrive easy.

My first was a timid, anxious Jack Russell cross. My first Kelpie came “free to good home.” Her daughter was born loud, reactive, and deeply suspicious of the world — earning the nickname Noisy before her eyes had even opened.

Noisy became my heart dog, and the true beginning of my work in behaviour.

At the same time, I was navigating my own challenges — long-term anxiety and depression, a late ADHD diagnosis, and a body that didn’t always keep up with the physical work I wanted to do. Rigid systems didn’t work for my brain, and they didn’t work for my dogs.

So I began building systems that did.

Structured but flexible.

Clear without being rigid.

Grounded in reality, not ideology.

That work became the foundation of The Holistic Dog Method — training that supports both ends of the leash.

Jock — The Quiet Shadow

A gentle soul who taught me the depth of a dog’s attachment — and the cost of loving deeply.

My work is built on three things

Calm Leadership

Training grounded in steady guidance, emotional regulation, and predictable routines.

Dogs thrive when their humans lead with calm, not force or chaos.

Purpose

Honouring your dog’s genetics, instincts, and individual needs.

Behaviour improves when dogs have meaningful outlets and a life that makes sense to them.

Clarity

Simple, consistent communication your dog can actually understand.

Clear cues, fair boundaries, and reliable patterns create confidence on both ends of the leash.

Calm Leadership gives dogs safety.

Purpose gives dogs meaning and fulfilment.

Clarity gives dogs understanding and confidence.

Together, these values create the foundation for A Balanced Dog — and the entire THDM training philosophy.

5 Odd Facts You Might Not Know About Me

1

I’m a coffee snob.

Instant coffee is a no from me — but I still try to limit caffeine because anxiety and ADHD don’t love it.

2

Gluten & Dairy are not my friends.

I restrict gluten and dairy because both trigger my asthma.

3

Spring isn't my favourite time of year...

I’m allergic to almost everything: grass, dust, pollen, cows, horses… and occasionally certain dogs (especially Staffies).

4

You won't see any makeup here.

I’m basically a tomboy. No makeup, no dresses — just boots, a cap, or my Akubra.

5

Glenmaggie will always be home.

I’ve lived in Glenmaggie since I was nearly three. I’ve moved away a few times, but I always find my way back home.

Supportive, clear, and grounded.

My role isn’t to judge or overwhelm you. It’s to help you understand your dog, build practical skills, and create a structure that actually fits your life.

We work together — calmly, clearly, and at a pace that supports both you and your dog — so change feels achievable and sustainable.

This work suits people who are willing to learn, reflect, and take responsibility — not those looking for shortcuts.

Every dog has a story.

Every owner deserves support.

And every relationship can change.
